This test is worth a big chunk of your grade.  But don’t worry! It’ll be easy-peasy if you study everything on this study guide, pay attention in class, and do all your work!

1.  Literary Terms:  Make sure you know the meanings of each of the following.  Also, make sure you are able to identify and write an example of each.

 

a.  simile:  A phrase comparing two things using like or as.

 

Example:  Her mind is like a sponge absorbing knowledge.

 

b.  metaphor:  A phrase comparing two things without using like or as.

 

Example:  Her mind is a sponge absorbing knowledge.

 

c.  foreshadowing:  The use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in the story.

 

Example:  The story about the three skeletons told at the beginning of “Three Skeleton Key” foreshadowed that the three lighthouse keepers may experience danger on the island.

 

d.  setting:  The setting tells when and where the story takes place.

 

Example:  “Three Skeleton Key” took place over several months in French Guiana.

 

2.  Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry:  Make sure you understand and can summarize Chapters 1-3 of this novel.

 

3. On a separate sheet of paper, explain the setting of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.

 

4.  On a separate sheet of paper, write down the main characters in the novel and write a detailed description of each.

 

5.  Write down the major events in the novel so far.

 

6.  Grammar:

 

A.  Be able to identify declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences.

1.  Declarative:  gives a statement.

C.  Be able to identify the simple subject, simple predicate, complete subject, and complete predicate in a sentence.

 

1.  Simple Subject:  This is the who or what the sentence is about, or the who or what that is doing the action.  This is always a noun, not including any adjectives that come before it.

 

2.  Simple Predicate:  This is the action or linking verb in a sentence.  The simple predicate is made up of all the verbs (linking and action verbs).

 

3.  Complete Subject:  This includes the simple subject up to and NOT including the verb.

 

4.  Complete Predicate:  This begins with the verb to the end of the sentence.

 

Example:  Under the umbrella tree sat a cute little kitten.

 

Simple Subject:  kitten

Simple Predicate:  sat

Complete Subject:  A cute little kitten

Complete Predicate:  sat under the umbrella tree

 

5.  The subject of an imperative sentence is always YOU even though it’s not written in the sentence.

 

Example:  Put that book down.

D.  Be able to identify sentences that are in natural order and inverted order.

 

1.  Natural Order:  The subject is first and the predicate is last.

 

2.  Example:  A big blue balloon popped dramatically at the party.

 

3.  Inverted Order:  The predicate is first and the subject is last.

 

4.  Example:  Popping dramatically at the party was a big blue balloon.

 

E.  Be able to identify simple and compound sentences.

 

1.  A simple sentence has only one subject and one predicate.

 

Example:  The ferocious bear almost attacked us.

 

2.  A compound sentence is made up of two sentences that are connected with a conjunction.

 

Example:  I was sweeping the kitchen floor, while my sister washed the dishes.

 

F.  Be able to identify compound subjects and compound predicates.

 

1.  A compound subject is a made up of two or more subjects. 

 

Example:  The boy and his father went to the baseball game.

 

2.  A compound predicate is made up of two or more predicates (verbs).

 

Example:  The fierce hurricane tore roofs off house, snatched plants from their roots, and threw debris over the roads.

 

G.  Be able to diagram the simple subjects (one or more) and verbs of a sentence.

 

H.  Be able to identify sentences, fragments, and run-on sentences.

 

1.  Sentence:  A complete thought with a subject and predicate.

 

Example:  The cow flew over the moon.

 

2.  Fragment:  An incomplete thought missing a subject or predicate.

 

Example:  over the moon.

3.  Run-On Sentence:  A phrase containing more than one sentence without correct punctuation or conjunctions being used.

 

Example:  The boy fell down the hill the girl came tumbling after.

 

I.  Collective Nouns:  Name a group of people, places, or things with members.

 

Examples:  team, class, group, etc.

 

A.  Singular Collective Nouns:  These nouns are singular when everyone in the group is doing the same thing all together.

 

Example:  The class was standing in a circle.

 

B.  Plural Collective Nouns:  These nouns are plural when certain members of the group are doing different things on their own.

 

Example:  The class begin their homework assignments while they wait for their teacher.
